The Bracco Italiano is a large pointing dog with a long head, drooping ears and characteristically loose lips. Its short coat is white with orange or brown markings, often with ticking as well. It has strong legs, a deep chest and a powerful body. Its most recognisable movement is a broad, energetic trot that allows it to search ground efficiently.
The Italian Shorthaired Pointer has long accompanied bird hunting. Dogs of a similar type appeared in Italian frescoes as early as the fourteenth century. As hunting methods changed, their duties developed: alongside locating and pointing game, work after the shot became increasingly important. Breeding established a versatile dog valued for endurance and cooperation in varied conditions.
The Bracco is usually gentle, attentive and strongly interested in people. It readily learns tasks with a clear purpose and can be very affectionate with those close to it. During activity it concentrates on scents and persistently explores its surroundings. It can continue a chosen task for a long time while remaining in contact with its owner.
