The Boykin Spaniel is a small, strongly built dog with a brown coat and long drooping ears. Its hair may be slightly wavy, with longer feathering on the legs, ears and underside. It has a lively expression and an athletic outline. Its size allowed it to fit comfortably in a small boat while retaining the strength to retrieve shot birds.
It originated in South Carolina, where hunters used light boats assembled from separate sections. They needed a versatile dog small enough not to hinder travel on the water. The breed's development is linked to Whitaker Boykin, whose surname it retains. Boykins helped find, flush and retrieve birds, remaining particularly valued by local hunters for a long time.
They are usually cheerful, sociable and willing to work together. The Boykin quickly engages in play, enjoys water and carrying objects, and watches its handler attentively while learning. Within the family it can be affectionate and calmer, while in the field game scents noticeably animate it. Its friendliness combines well with persistence and considerable energy during purposeful activity.
