Bouvier des Flandres — size comparison — facts and sources
The Bouvier des Flandres has a broad, powerful body and a large, heavily bearded head. Dense eyebrows create a serious expression, and harsh hair protects against bad weather. Strong muscles lie beneath the rough coat. Compact and substantial, it nevertheless trots freely with clear drive from the hind legs.
The breed comes from Flanders on both sides of today’s Belgian–French border. Farmers and traders needed dogs to drive cattle, guard farmsteads and haul loads. Selection chiefly favoured resilience and usefulness in daily work. Agricultural mechanisation reduced those duties, and the Bouvier found new working, guarding and family-companion roles.
It is usually calm, attentive and confident. Rather than reacting abruptly to every novelty, it often observes first. It forms strong bonds and can patiently join shared activities. It keeps more distance from strangers. Once deciding to act, it may be firm and persistent. Its ability to learn combines independent assessment with cooperation.
