The Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound, or Barak, has a strong body, drooping ears and harsh, tousled hair. A beard and bushy eyebrows give it a serious expression. Its coat may combine earthy grey, red and yellow shades, sometimes with white. It is not heavy: it moves energetically with a clear stride, its build supporting long travel over uneven ground.
The Barak descends from hounds of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was also formerly called the Illyrian Hound. Local breeding was associated with mountain hunting, where hardiness and holding a trail mattered more than spectacular speed.
It is active and bold, readily exploring with its nose. On finding an interesting trail it can focus completely and persistently check successive stretches of ground. It may not respond immediately to people at such times. During searches it readily uses a carrying voice. Strong commitment to work combines with considerable independence.
