The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Border Terrier has a narrow, strong body, relatively long legs and a harsh coat with dense undercoat. Its short, broad, otter-like head is distinctive. Small ears drop beside the cheeks, and facial hair is less abundant than in many other terriers. Its entire build serves efficient movement and endurance.
The breed comes from the English-Scottish border. Dogs accompanied mounted hunts and packs of hounds, then worked at fox earths. They had to keep up across country while retaining a body narrow enough to follow underground. This combination of working demands shaped the Border's characteristic proportions. Working usefulness was valued above all for a long time.
The Border is usually cheerful and open with people. It enjoys shared activities but can also explore very independently. New scents or small animals' movements easily attract its attention. It is persistent and does not always quickly abandon an interesting activity. Among familiar people it can be affectionate, readily alternating quieter rest with energetic play and exploring nearby discoveries.
