The Bohemian Shepherd, known as the Chodský Pes, is a medium-sized dog with a long black-and-tan coat. It has small erect ears, a gentle expression and a somewhat elongated outline. Fuller hair around the neck gives it a fluffy appearance, but beneath the coat it remains agile and not particularly heavy. Its movement is springy, with quick changes of direction.
It comes from the Chodsko region of western Bohemia. Modern breeding sought to recreate local herding and guarding dogs known from regional tradition. A recognisable appearance and qualities useful in cooperation with people were established. Despite resembling the German Shepherd Dog, the Chodský Pes has its own standard and distinct breeding history associated with the Czech borderlands.
It is alert, quick to learn and readily engages in shared tasks. It quickly notices changes, though its responses need not be abrupt. Within the family it usually shows affection and interest in household members, and during learning it watches its handler attentively. A good nose and persistence allow prolonged searching. Its liveliness accompanies a willingness to adapt its pace to human activity.
