The Boerboel is a large South African dog with a broad head, strong neck and pronounced muscles. Its short coat reveals a powerful, slightly elongated body. It looks substantial, yet its proportions allow agility and free movement. Drooping ears and calm eyes give its head a composed expression that can quickly become intensely focused.
The breed developed around southern African farms. Large dogs from various lines were crossed to select strong, capable guardians able to protect people, buildings and livestock. Resilience in local conditions and usefulness in everyday work were important. Today's Boerboel retains this history in a name associated with a farmer's dog and in its powerful mastiff-type build.
It is usually confident, composed and deeply attached to its family. It enjoys time beside its people while watching the surroundings attentively. It may keep its distance from strangers and independently assess their behaviour. It is quick to learn and capable of cooperation, but a strong territorial guarding inclination means it does not remain indifferent to every new situation. It can be assertive with other dogs.
