The Bluetick Coonhound is a strong, agile dog with long ears and a short, densely ticked coat. Fine black flecks on white create a bluish shade from a distance, giving the breed its name. Larger dark patches and tan markings complete the colouring. Its outline is athletic rather than heavy, built for sustained travel through woodland.
It developed in the United States among hounds tracking raccoons and other game. When an animal hid in a tree, the dog stayed below and indicated its location vocally. The ability to interpret older, fainter trails was also valued. Since 1953 representatives have served as the University of Tennessee's sporting mascot, making the Bluetick recognisable beyond hunting circles.
It is persistent, curious and intensely interested in scents. With those close to it, it often shows affection and seeks contact, yet outdoors it readily begins independent searches. Its deep voice is easy to hear, particularly when excited. It combines friendliness towards people with great determination; finding an interesting trail can matter more than other nearby events.
