The Blue Picardy Spaniel has a strong body, drooping ears and a moderately long coat with feathering on the legs and tail. Black hair mixed with white gives a distinctive bluish shade, particularly visible from a distance. Darker patches may contrast sharply with the roan background. It appears substantial but moves freely and lightly.
It descends from hunting dogs of northern France. Black and black-and-white spaniels known as dogs of the north were described there in the nineteenth century. Separate breeding developed in the early twentieth century, and the standard was registered in 1938. Despite 'spaniel' in its name, this is a pointing breed: it locates game and indicates its position by standing still. It was particularly valued for woodcock hunting.
It is usually gentle, affectionate and eager for contact with household members. During shared activities it watches people attentively while exploring the ground on its own initiative. It can work persistently without nervous haste. On walks, scents easily attract its attention, particularly in dense vegetation. After activity it readily returns to quietly accompanying its family.
