The American Blue Bay Shepherd is a large dog with erect ears, an elongated muzzle and a dense, slate-blue coat. Light eyes and head proportions give it a wolf-like appearance. Its body is slightly elongated and its tail richly feathered. As this is still a developing line, individual dogs differ in details of build and coat length.
Vicki Spencer began the project in the United States. She combined blue German Shepherd Dogs with selected dogs of documented wolf ancestry. The first Blue Bay Shepherd litters were born in 2011. The aim was to retain a particular appearance while obtaining a human companion. This is a modern breeding programme rather than an old herding breed associated with a specific region.
The founder's descriptions particularly emphasise gentle contact and interest in people. Breeding aims to reduce excessive fearfulness and defensive behaviour, but these goals do not guarantee every descendant's temperament. Blue Bay Shepherds may be active, curious and strongly attached to household members. Knowledge of their behaviour comes chiefly from breeding observations and owners' accounts.
