The Black Mouth Cur is a strong, agile, shorthaired dog with a broad head and hanging ears. A dark muzzle is its best-known feature, although colours vary between lines. The body may be almost square or slightly elongated. Long legs and distinct muscles support movement over uneven terrain.
Its precise origins remain uncertain, with its history associated with the southern United States. It accompanied settlers as a versatile hunting, livestock and home-guarding dog. Many lines remained within families for generations. UKC recognition in 1998 formalised the description of an existing working population.
Persistent, alert and strongly attached to familiar people, it readily explores independently and acts quickly on interesting stimuli. Searches involve several senses rather than scent alone. Its temperament is distinctly work-oriented: energy focuses on a task, which it may pursue with considerable determination.
