The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large, strong dog with long, softly drooping ears. Its short black coat bears distinct reddish-brown markings on the muzzle, chest and legs. Looser head skin and a calm expression give it a gentle appearance. Its outline combines strength with the endurance needed for long journeys over varied terrain.
It developed in the United States as a tracking dog. 'Coonhound' refers to raccoons pursued until they took refuge in a tree. The dog remained below and indicated the animal's hiding place to the hunter with a loud voice. This hunting method required a good nose, independence and readiness to cooperate with other hounds, even far from direct human guidance.
At home it is often gentle and sociable, though not every individual immediately trusts strangers. It usually tolerates canine companions nearby well. On an interesting trail its pace can change markedly: it becomes persistent, absorbed in searching and less interested in other events. Its deep voice and inclination to investigate scents independently remain noticeable even on ordinary outings.
