Male western capercaillies are large and dark with greenish chests, pale bills and red eyebrows. Females are markedly smaller and brown-patterned, helping conceal ground nests.
It inhabits extensive Eurasian forests with rich undergrowth. Needles, buds, leaves and fruit provide food, seasonally supplemented by insects. Displaying males spread their tails and produce complex calls.
