The grey partridge has grey-brown plumage and an orange face; males have a distinct dark underbody horseshoe. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, it has also been introduced elsewhere.
It feeds and nests on the ground in fields, meadows and open country. Seeds, leaves and insects provide food, insects particularly important to chicks. Coveys form outside breeding.
