Wood Thrush — size comparison — facts and sources

The wood thrush breeds in mature deciduous and mixed forests of eastern North America. Damp litter, tree cover and lower vegetation layers matter. After breeding it migrates to warmer forests, continuing to use shaded places providing both small animals and fruit.

It feeds mainly on the forest floor, tossing leaves aside to uncover invertebrates. It eats insects, spiders and other small animals. Fruit becomes more important in late summer and autumn, helping build reserves for migration.

The female builds a nest in a low tree or shrub fork under leaf cover. The male sings from branches, particularly morning and evening, marking territory. Pairs jointly defend the area, although on wintering grounds birds may feed in loose mixed gatherings.
