Wilson's plover is associated with coasts of the Americas. It inhabits sandy beaches, lagoon margins, saltmarshes and exposed coastal flats. It usually stays near the sea and, unlike some other plovers, less often occurs far inland on extensive inland feeding grounds.
It visually hunts small shore animals. Crabs are particularly important, seized with its strong bill and broken up before swallowing. It also eats other crustaceans, worms and insects, finding prey during short runs across exposed ground.
It nests on sand or gravel, often near a little vegetation cover. Adults defend the breeding area and may feign injury to lure intruders from eggs and young. Mobile chicks leave the nest and gather food themselves under parental protection.
