The wild turkey searches for food mainly on the ground. It gathers seeds, fruit, nuts and plant parts, as well as invertebrates. It moves leaves and litter, using forests and adjoining open areas.
The young particularly need accessible insects during rapid growth. Males perform elaborate courtship displays, while females nest on the ground and lead their offspring alone. Chicks quickly become mobile but require protection during their early lives.
Although it spends most of the day on the ground, it can fly and roosts in trees. The wild species should be distinguished from domestic turkey varieties whose build has been altered by breeding.
