White stork — size comparison — facts and sources
The white stork has a white body, black flight feathers and long red legs and bill. It walks calmly through meadows, fields and wetlands, catching animals it detects. Prey includes insects, earthworms, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals, with diet depending on local abundance.
It builds a large stick nest on a tree, building or platform. A pair enlarges it over successive seasons and greets by throwing back the head and clattering the bill. Both parents supply chicks remaining high above ground.
Many European storks migrate to Africa for winter. They use rising air, circling to gain height and gliding to the next place where warmed air lifts them again.
