White-breasted Nuthatch — size comparison — facts and sources

The white-breasted nuthatch occurs in wooded parts of North America. It particularly favours deciduous forests but also uses mixed stands, parks and large gardens. A pair may remain on one territory year-round if suitable cavities and food trees are available.

It searches bark crevices for insects and spiders, supplementing its diet with seeds and nuts. It caches surpluses beneath loose bark, often covering them with lichen, moss or other nearby material.

It nests in natural cavities, old woodpecker holes and sometimes nest boxes. It usually does not excavate the entire hole itself. It feeds along trunks in various directions, including headfirst downwards; in winter a pair may join chickadees and woodpeckers searching trees together.
