Western tanager — size comparison — facts and sources

The western tanager breeds in the forests of western North America, often in stands containing conifers. It searches for food in the canopy, picking insects from branches and leaves. When necessary, it makes short aerial sallies to catch passing prey.

During the breeding season a pair occupies a woodland territory and places its nest on a branch.

After breeding it moves south towards Mexico and Central America. On migration it may be seen in parks and gardens, where it feeds on fruit and available insects.
