The western screech owl occurs in western North America. It inhabits varied woodland, from forests and river valleys to parks and gardens with old trees. By day it rests in a cavity or dense branches, remaining well concealed and usually avoiding prolonged exposure in open places.
After dark it hunts small mammals, birds and invertebrates. Prey type depends on local conditions; near water it may also catch crayfish. It most often waits on a branch before making a short flight towards prey.
It breeds in natural cavities, old woodpecker holes or suitable nest boxes. It does not build an elaborate stick nest. Partners may retain their bond and occupy the same area for many seasons, using calls for contact and territorial signalling despite their nocturnal activity.
