Western Bluebird — size comparison — facts and sources
The western bluebird inhabits western North America, choosing open woodland and areas where the ground is easy to watch. It hunts mainly insects. It sits on a low lookout, spots prey and makes a short flight to seize it on the ground.
To breed it needs a tree cavity or nest box. It does not excavate its own hole, so suitable trees remain an important habitat component. The pair defends the nest surroundings, and the parents regularly bring food to the chicks.
After breeding it becomes more sociable and uses fruit. Flocks visit wooded areas providing food during colder months.
