The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The wandering albatross has exceptionally long, narrow wings, among the widest-spanning of living birds. It spends most of its life over the ocean. Using wind above the waves, it alternates climbs and descents to cover vast distances with few wingbeats.
It takes squid, fish and crustaceans from the sea surface or immediately nearby. Feeding grounds can lie far from its breeding island. While caring for offspring, the parents alternate long foraging trips.
Partners perform elaborate greeting rituals and raise a single chick. The chick waits in the nest for long periods for the adults to return. The extended breeding cycle means successful reproduction requires many months of cooperation between the pair.
