Victoria crowned pigeon — size comparison — facts and sources

The Victoria crowned pigeon is a large pigeon of New Guinea’s lowland forests. Blue-grey plumage, a dark breast and a lacy crest with pale feather tips create its recognisable appearance. It moves mainly on foot along the forest floor, collecting fallen fruit, seeds and small invertebrates.

It often forms small groups but rests and nests above ground. A pair builds a nest on branches and usually raises one chick. Both parents feed it. Initially it receives crop milk, a nutrient-rich secretion, followed by broken-down food. A quiet walk through leaf litter gives way to flight into a tree when shelter is needed.
