Toco toucan — size comparison — facts and sources
The toco toucan is the largest member of the toucan family. It has a black body, white throat and enormous orange bill with a dark tip patch. It lives in South America, using open woodland, savannas and riverside trees. The large bill is relatively light because of its internal structure.
Fruit picked from branches makes up most of its food. It supplements this with insects, eggs and small vertebrates. It usually travels in pairs or small groups, making short flights between trees.
A pair nests in a tree cavity and brings food to the developing young. The richly vascularised bill also releases excess heat: changing blood flow regulates heat exchange with the surroundings. The same organ therefore serves feeding, interactions with other toucans and temperature regulation.
