Temminck's tragopan inhabits mountain forests with dense undergrowth. It carefully searches the ground for leaves, shoots, fruit, seeds and invertebrates. It climbs trees to rest and roost.

During courtship the male expands a bright blue throat lappet normally concealed in feathers. Body movements and colourful plumage accompany the display. The female incubates eggs and leads young as they follow her through the forest.
