Swainson’s hawk — size comparison — facts and sources

Swainson's hawk lives in open landscapes of western North America. It uses prairies, pastures and fields with scattered trees or small woodlands. After breeding many birds undertake long migrations to South American wintering grounds, travelling in large groups.

While rearing young it catches mainly small mammals such as ground squirrels, mice and voles. Outside breeding, insects are extremely important: grasshoppers, crickets and dragonflies. It may catch them in flight or run after them on the ground.

It usually nests near the top of an isolated tree or in woodland beside a watercourse. It also uses tree strips beside crops. The pair defends the nest area against other predators; courtship involves circling, diving and the male climbing high again above the chosen site.
