Spix’s macaw — size comparison — facts and sources
Spix's macaw has blue wings and tail and a paler, grey-blue head. It originates from a small area of the semi-arid Caatinga region of northeastern Brazil. Trees along watercourses provided food and nesting cavities.
The last known wild individual was observed in 2000. The species survived through birds in human care and breeding programmes.
In 2022 releases began near Curaçá within its former range. Young were recorded hatching in the wild there the following year. Population recovery requires both habitat preservation and continued breeding and health monitoring.
