The stout orange bill surrounded by bare pink skin is particularly prominent in male Snares penguins. Their cheeks are dark, without the characteristic white streaks of the Fiordland penguin.
Their breeding sites are confined to the Snares Islands. They nest in dense colonies, including under coastal forest cover. The birds follow worn paths to the sea; some rest on low branches. They obtain food in the waters surrounding the archipelago.
As the chicks grow, they gather in groups, allowing both parents to go to sea to find food.
