Short-eared Owl — size comparison — facts and sources

The short-eared owl occurs in open areas in many parts of the world. It uses meadows, peatlands, tundra and grassy plains where it can search low vegetation freely. Local occurrence may be linked to rodent numbers, so occupied areas and bird numbers may change between seasons.

It hunts mainly small mammals, especially voles and mice, supplementing its diet with birds. It searches in low flight and may briefly hover above prey. During breeding it is also active by day, while in winter it often chooses dimmer light.

It nests on the ground in a dry place sheltered by grasses. The male supplies the female with food during incubation and brooding. Courtship involves acrobatics and wing clapping. In winter birds may share resting sites, sometimes with other owls.
