Sharp-shinned Hawk — size comparison — facts and sources

The sharp-shinned hawk occurs in wooded parts of the Americas. It can be secretive during breeding, choosing dense canopy cover, often including conifers. It is easier to notice on migration when crossing open ground or using rising air currents.

Its main prey is small birds, including thrushes, sparrows and warblers. It attacks suddenly from cover and pursues rapidly, using its tail to steer among trees. It sometimes catches rodents on the ground or insects in the air.

It usually nests high in a tree but below a closed canopy. Breeding pairs occupy separate sites and remain inconspicuous. On migration they may travel in loose groups; their characteristic flight combines several wingbeats with a short glide.
