Semipalmated Plover — size comparison — facts and sources

The semipalmated plover breeds in northern North America on open shores and tundra. After breeding it occurs on mudflats, beaches, lakeshores and other exposed feeding sites. Migrations follow coasts and cross the continental interior towards warmer wintering grounds.

It feeds mainly visually, making short runs and pausing to peck detected prey. It eats small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans and worms. On exposed shores it may feed with other small shorebirds.

It lays eggs in a small ground depression, often on gravel or sand. Both parents care for the brood and try to lure predators away. Chicks soon walk and find food themselves, remaining under adult protection around the nest.
