Scarlet macaw — size comparison — facts and sources
The scarlet macaw has a bright red body, a broad yellow wing band and blue flight feathers. Pale, almost bare skin surrounds the eyes, while a long tail gives the bird a slender outline. It inhabits lowland forests of tropical America, including riverside woodland.
In the canopy it collects fruit, seeds and nuts. Its powerful bill cracks hard food coverings while a foot holds the pieces. It also uses its bill to climb, hooking it onto a branch before moving its feet.
It often occurs in pairs or flocks. Partners stay in contact through loud calls audible as they fly above the forest. They choose a tree cavity for breeding; the young remain there under adult care before starting to accompany them outside the nest.
