The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The sanderling breeds in the High Arctic but spends much of the year on coasts far from its breeding grounds. It particularly favours sandy surf beaches. It follows retreating water, then deftly escapes the next wave, using brief exposures of wet ground.
It eats small crabs, other crustaceans, worms and molluscs. It gathers food visually or probes sand and shallow water with its bill. During the Arctic season insects and larvae supplement the diet, and plant parts are also taken when prey is scarce.
The nest is a ground depression, often in an exposed place near water. Brood-care arrangements may differ between populations. During migration and winter, sanderlings gather in flocks, sometimes resting in very tight groups with other shorebirds.
