Saddle-billed stork — size comparison — facts and sources

The saddle-billed stork is a tall, long-legged black-and-white stork. A yellow saddle-like shield sits on its red-and-black bill. Iris colour distinguishes the sexes: females have pale eyes and males dark eyes. It inhabits shallow rivers, floodplains and African wetlands.

It wades slowly, catching fish, amphibians, crustaceans, small reptiles and insects. Usually encountered alone or in pairs, it builds a large tree nest. While raising chicks it returns regularly with prey from nearby wetlands.
