Sabine’s gull — size comparison — facts and sources

In breeding plumage Sabine's gull has a dark grey head bordered by a black line and a black bill with a yellow tip. In flight its wings show a striking three-coloured pattern of grey, black and white. A forked tail gives its outline a light appearance.

It breeds on wet Arctic tundra near pools and lakes. It eats insects and small aquatic prey. After breeding it undertakes long migrations over the open ocean, using areas where upwelling of cool water promotes abundant food.

During breeding Sabine's gull may walk over wet tundra, wade and gather insects. After moving to the open ocean it uses other methods to obtain small animals near the water surface.
