The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The ruby-throated hummingbird visits deciduous forests, gardens and flower-filled clearings in North America. Its back is greenish, and the male wears a ruby-shining throat patch whose colour depends on the light. A slender bill reaches inside flowers.
It drinks nectar while hovering. Its wing movements allow it to hold position before a flower and fly backwards. Besides nectar it eats small arthropods. Around rich food sources it can be strongly territorial, driving other hummingbirds away.
During seasonal migrations it travels between northern breeding areas and warmer wintering grounds. Some birds cross the Gulf of Mexico in a long flight over open water.
