Rough-legged Hawk — size comparison — facts and sources

The rough-legged hawk breeds in northern North America and Eurasia, on tundra and other open Arctic landscapes. It uses cliffs, rocky outcrops and extensive treeless areas. In winter it moves south, occurring over fields, meadows and other rodent-rich places.

Lemmings and voles are important breeding-season prey, with mice and shrews also taken on wintering grounds. It hunts from perches or in low flight. It can hover into the wind over a selected area before dropping onto detected prey.

The pair builds a stick nest on a rock ledge, sometimes using a previous season's site. Bird numbers and distribution depend on prey availability. In winter individuals may defend their feeding grounds, although communal roosts in groups of trees also occur.
