Rock dove — size comparison — facts and sources
The wild rock dove inhabits cliffs and rocky coasts. It has grey plumage, dark wing bars and a metallic sheen on its neck. Feral city pigeons descend from its domesticated descendants; buildings provide ledges and crevices resembling natural nesting sites.
On the ground it gathers seeds, grain and other small plant parts. Both parents care for the young. Initially they feed the chicks a crop secretion known as crop milk, later supplying increasing amounts of other food. The young remain in the nest until they can fly.
