The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The red-shouldered hawk is associated with North American forests, particularly near water. In the east it selects wet deciduous and mixed forests, and in the west also oak woods and riverside woodland. It may live in suburbs where buildings alternate with larger tree stands.
It usually hunts from branches beneath the canopy or perches beside ponds. Its diet includes small mammals, amphibians, lizards, snakes and crayfish. It waits motionlessly, then drops rapidly onto detected prey on the ground.
It most often places its stick nest in a deciduous tree fork, sometimes near a stream. It may return to the same structure in successive years. During breeding it defends territory and drives away crows, owls and other hawks; courtship involves circling and steep descents.
