The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The red-headed woodpecker obtains food in several ways. It gathers insects from wood and vegetation, may catch them in flight and also feeds on the ground. Its diet additionally includes fruit, seeds and nuts.
It stores food in crevices and other hiding places. To breed it excavates a cavity, usually in a place offering access to open space.
It favours wooded areas with dead tree sections, orchards and forest edges, where both food and suitable wood are available. Movements outside the breeding season may be linked to seed and nut abundance. Its presence in an area can therefore vary between years.
