Red-breasted nuthatch — size comparison — facts and sources

The red-breasted nuthatch inhabits mainly North American conifer forests. It uses spruces, firs, pines and other trees providing food and nesting sites. During seasonal movements it may occur far beyond typical habitat, visiting parks, orchards and woodland in farmland.

In summer it eats insects, spiders and other invertebrates, also feeding them to its young. Conifer seeds matter in autumn and winter. It hides some food in bark crevices and wedges large seeds before breaking them with its bill to eat the contents.

It can excavate a cavity in soft or decaying wood. It moves skilfully along trunks, including headfirst downwards. Outside breeding it often joins mixed groups of chickadees and other small woodland birds.
