Purple Sandpiper — size comparison — facts and sources

The purple sandpiper breeds on Arctic tundra, stony plateaus, slopes and wet lowlands. It usually winters on rocky coasts, often farther north than other shorebirds. It selects ice-free shore sections where waves expose organisms among stones, algae and attached invertebrates.

It eats bivalves, snails, worms and small crustaceans. It probes crevices and searches stranded seaweed; small bivalves may be swallowed whole. It most often feeds at low tide, sometimes also at night. During breeding it also uses insects and other tundra animals.

The male prepares several scrapes, from which the female chooses the nest site. Both incubate, but the male takes the main role in caring for hatched chicks. Outside breeding birds are sociable and may rest with turnstones, sanderlings and other rocky-shore waders.
