The pin-tailed whydah inhabits African grassland and woodland. Breeding males display very long tails in flights before females. Outside breeding it joins other small seed-eaters for seeds and insects.
Females lay in other small birds’ nests, chiefly waxbills. Hosts incubate and rear whydahs beside their own young. Chick begging signals help obtain foster-parent food.
