Peregrine falcon — size comparison — facts and sources
The peregrine falcon has a compact body, long, pointed wings and dark stripes beside its pale face. It inhabits cliffs, mountains and open landscapes, using tall buildings in cities. From an elevated perch it watches the airspace through which potential prey passes.
It hunts chiefly birds. It may pursue them in flight or rise above its prey and strike from overhead after a rapid dive with folded wings. The attack depends on altitude, terrain and the behaviour of the pursued bird.
A pair defends a breeding site on a rock ledge or structure. Adults are particularly alert around the nest and regularly deliver captured birds to their young after hatching.
