It breeds on islands and shores of large water bodies from southeastern Europe to Asia. After breeding it moves towards ice-free waters and warmer coasts. It is usually associated with areas offering abundant fish food.
In winter an adult loses its full black hood. Young birds have brown-grey plumage and require a separate set of identification features. Among black-headed gulls, Pallas's gull stands out for its massive build, powerful bill and broad wingspan.
