Painted bunting — size comparison — facts and sources
The male painted bunting has a blue head, green back and red underside. The greenish female blends much more easily into vegetation. The species uses scrub, woodland edges and gardens, usually staying close to cover.
It collects seeds and insects near the ground. Despite the male’s bright colours, it can be difficult to see in dense shrubs. During breeding it advertises its territory through song, while the female chooses a concealed nest site. After breeding, birds may form loose groups at seed-rich feeding grounds.
