The northern pygmy owl inhabits wooded areas of western North America. It occurs in coniferous and mixed stands, including in mountains, selecting areas with clearings and forest edges.
It hunts small birds, mammals and insects by day. It waits on an exposed branch, from which it makes a rapid attack. It can catch prey large relative to its own size and stores surplus food in hiding places for later.
It nests in natural cavities or holes left by woodpeckers. The male brings food to the female and young. Chickadees, nuthatches and other birds may gather around the owl, attempting to drive this dangerous neighbour away with alarm calls and attacks.
