The northern hawk owl inhabits northern forests of North America and Eurasia. It selects forests interspersed with clearings and peatlands and areas where some trees have been destroyed. It uses high, exposed lookouts and can be visible from far away when perched atop a dead tree.
Unlike many owls it often hunts by day. Small mammals, especially voles, are its staple prey; birds may also matter in winter. It watches from a perch and attacks, sometimes locating prey beneath snow.
It nests in cavities, split trunks and similar tree hollows. Food availability influences movements beyond its usual range. Near the brood adults vigorously defend young, and surplus prey may be stored for later in branches or crevices.
