The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The northern harrier inhabits extensive North American areas with low vegetation. It breeds in wetlands, meadows, prairies and tundra. In winter it also uses fields, dunes and dry plains.
It hunts in low flight, watching and listening for small mammals and birds. Voles are important prey, especially on northern wintering grounds. Elsewhere it also eats amphibians, reptiles and other small animals available in vegetation.
The nest is on the ground in a dense clump of grasses, sedges or reeds. The female incubates and broods the young, while the male supplies much of the food. In winter birds may gather at communal roosts, sometimes with short-eared owls. Courtship includes spectacular undulating flights above the territory.
